Wall Drawing, CWRU Time Capsule 2024 (above & left):
In the spring of 2024, Case Western Reserve University (CSWU) students and staff were invited to share with me objects they felt captured a sense of their time. Rendered in this two-story vinyl wall drawing are friendship bracelets, beloved toys, a favorite CWRU pen (and level), Earbuds, a tennis ball honoring CWRU’s celebrated women’s tennis team, a brick from a recently razed campus building, and an antique pair of red rubber dog booties, worn by a family pet. These precious things are joined with regional flora and fauna: flowers like the chicory, orange lily, and tulip tree blossom, songbirds like a Carolina Wren, Titmouse, and the elusive Wood Thrush. These elements twirl, fly, perch, or float among the clouds, while a tomcat, named Bob, sits sentinel at the door.
Schroeder’s Eclipse (below):
This drawing celebrates the Great North American Eclipse of April 2024 and our considerable luck as Northeast Ohio lay within the direct path of totality. The drawing attempts to capture a conflation of phenomena from that day. As the midday sky went dark, native birds were silenced, moonflowers opened, “Baily’s beads” appeared, and the 360 degree horizon line glowed. Imaginatively added to my solitary picnic that day are the cherished objects belonging to CWRU students, generously shared with me for inclusion in this project. The title refers to George Schroeder, my beloved college professor, mentor, and friend who died in 2019. He would have turned 86 on April 8th, the day of the eclipse.
