Space Face Series
I spend many hours of a given year walking. Most often, I can be found on the same route around the rural Ohio village where I live. As I walk, I pick up “pocket litter:” buckeyes and acorns, bottle caps and bird feathers, nuts and bolts, while noting impressions of the changing landscape. Each of these small objects points to something greater; a rusted ball bearing - the old pick-up it came from, a golden leaf from a gingko tree – the changing season, a piece of agate – a reminder of geological time. In the studio, I mix the observations I’ve gathered with the pocket litter and other ephemera I’ve collected to create this ongoing series of drawings.
Space Faces (the title a nod to a song by favorite British Rock group Doves, formerly Sub Sub) are an exercise in form and delight. “Faces” playfully appear within each composition; a distant moon or seashell becomes a nose, buttons or light bulbs are eyes, a maple seed or concert wristband a mouth. Each object placed changes the expression of the face; whether cheerful, pensive, grumpy, or surprised, each unique facial expression is created through the funny and careful combination of found objects and landscape.
